Adult Learners’ Week 15th–21st May 2010

The European Union recognise the significance and importance of Adult Learners’ Week in helping reach the goals it sets for lifelong learning.

Across Europe Adult Learners’ Week is celebrated as an example of good practice in addressing issues of exclusion and that’s why we’re delighted to support the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion.

Broxburn man's charity trek

A YOUNG West Lothian man is set to raise thousands of pounds for Help the Aged after an injury helped him identify with older people.

Mike Firth, a kitchen supervisor from Broxburn, is preparing for the challenge of a lifetime this spring as he sets off on the Age Concern and Help the Aged 2010 Trek China event.

And the 21-year-old was inspired to get involved with the leading older people's charity after an accident left him with a broken leg.

"The first month of my recovery was the worst time of my life," explained Mike.

"I was confined to my bed and had to be completely reliant on my family and friends to help me get through each day.

"The experience opened my eyes to the fact that there are older people out there who go through that every single day, and many of them have no friends or family to support them.

"So I got involved with Age Concern and Help the Aged to try and make a difference."

The Age Concern and Help the Aged Trek China 2011 event takes place in May.
