Basic Introduction to Computers Who is the course for? This is a class for complete beginners. There are no formal entry requirements. You will learn the basic skills needed to use a computer. What do we cover? This will vary based on your needs. You can work at your own pace. Typical content will include: - Starting up and shutting down a computer
- Using the mouse and keyboard and understanding what they do
- Creating and editing documents including saving, printing, opening and closing a file
- Creating and renaming folders
- Using the file system
- Understanding some of the terms used about computers
- Using graphics and clip art, making posters etc.
- Creating spreadsheets and introduction to formula
- Internet: introduction to Internet and email
Time commitment: This course usually runs over 6 2-hour sessions. Introduction to Computer Applications Who is the course for? Anyone who has basic skills in using a computer, switching on, using the mouse, opening and closing programmes and saving files. What do we cover? - Word-processing: using Microsoft Word, composing documents and letters, editing, printing and saving.
- Spreadsheets: using Microsoft Excel to make spreadsheets, managing financial and numerical data, producing graphs etc.
- Database: using Microsoft Access to create and manage information such as membership lists and contact lists.
- Presentations: using Microsoft PowerPoint to produce presentations using text and graphics.
We will also look at: Suitability and compatibility of software, system requirements: i.e. processor speed, memory and hard disc space, managing files and folders, copying files and information security. Time commitment: This is a certificated SQA course. It will require a commitment for up to 20 weeks. PC Passport: Beginners Level Who is the course for? Anyone who has basic skills in using a computer, switching on, using the mouse, and keyboard, opening and closing programmes and saving files. What do we cover? There are three modules, all of which need to be completed to receive a group award. - Word-processing using Microsoft Word: composing documents and letters, editing, printing and saving documents to disc.

- Produce text using a keyboard and word processing software
- Produce business correspondence from provided materials
- Recall and edit text and produce hard copy
Time commitment: This is a certificated SQA course. It will require a commitment for up to 20 weeks although it can be completed in a shorter time dependant on your level of knowledge. Word Processing 2 (Intermediate 2) Course summary This course is designed to enable you to produce business correspondence and display materials at a rate of approximately 300 words in one hour. This unit is set in the context of the modern business environment. You will use up-to-date software packages, which you should explore yourself, using help menus and shortcuts as appropriate. You will normally have completed the Word Processing 1 unit or equivalent. Outcomes - Demonstrate good working practices
- Produce a tabulated statement
- Produce business correspondence
- Recall, edit text and produce hard copy of documents as directed
- Produce mailable copy of approximately 300 words in a one-hour working period

Introduction to Digital Photography Who is the course for? Anyone wishing to learn the basics of using a digital camera. Applicants should have a basic knowledge of computing. No previous knowledge of digital photography is required. Owning a camera is not essential as one can be provided. What do we cover? - How the camera works
- Composing a photograph
- Downloading photographs to your computer or printer
- Editing and enhancing your photographs
We will also look at: Managing files and folders, copying files and information security. Time commitment: This course usually runs over 6 2-hour sessions. Supported Learning Sessions These are informal drop-in sessions for people new to computers or lacking in confidence. An IT mentor will be on hand to provide informal support. You can come whenever you like and there is no need to book.
