Getting Started
The qualifications that you need, can depend on which sport it is that you are interested in coaching. Different National Governing Bodies have different levels of qualifications and training pathways. Some sports require a ‘getting started’ type of qualification and others start with a level one. Please click on the relevant link to go to the governing body sites to find out more information.
The West Lothian Coach Education Programme comes out twice a year and contains details of both sport specific NGB Awards and generic courses in the local area. Simply fill in a booking form or contact the officer responsible.

Opportunities
Find out what sports clubs there are in your local area and contact the club representative to find out what coaching opportunities they may have. You can also contact the Sports Development Unit on 01506 776 295 or email sportandrecreation@westlothian.gov.uk to find out who the responsible officer is and if there are any coaching opportunities available for the programmes run by the Development Team and the Active School Co-ordinators.

If you are already coaching
It is always good to keep abreast of what’s happening in your sport and the links to the governing bodies and sportscotland should help you do this. West Lothian also offer a number of SCUK (Sports Coach UK) workshops throughout the year that will compliment your NGB Awards and improve your overall coaching ability. We also run Good Practice and Child Protection Courses that is a necessary course for all our employed coaches and Emergency First Aid for Sport, which is recommended for all our employed coaches.
